For an increasing number of families these days families, buying Christmas decorations can be an expensive proposition, often times an expense they can ill afford. Using homemade decorations not only can bring the family together for a special project it can also be used for family members to use their imagination to create something beautiful for the holidays. And with all of the of materials available, it is easier than ever to create a wide range of fun and beautiful customized Christmas decorations. Many families enjoy making homemade decorations as a way of gathering the family together in a project — with the additional benefit of beautifying your home, and the satisfaction of having done something by hand, and together as a family — and many of the customized Christmas decorations created are passed down through the generations.
Mass production has made many of the decorations that are sold to millions every year, but before modern manufacturing turned the holidays into a commercial enterprise, nearly everyone used homemade customized Christmas ornaments on their tree and around the home. And while some may still prefer the glitter and glitz of shiny store-bought glass ornaments, others are returning to unique homemade ornaments and decorations for their tree as well as the rest of the house. With the use of homemade customized Christmas decorations, each home can have its own sense of individuality with no two objects being the same.
Anything Can Be Something
Everything from clothespins to empty jar lids can be turned into homemade Christmas decorations with a little imagination. The clothespins can be painted to look like miniature reindeer and with a few pieces of felt cut in the right shape, eggshells can be turned into snowmen and used as homemade Christmas decorations sitting on a shelf. Chains made out of popcorn (a classic favorite if ever there was one) can be decorated with tiny ribbons interspersed along its length to make these homemade Christmas decorations more colorful as well as edible. Cutting snowflakes out of paper is another common project and many schools offer the students the chance to make personal customized Christmas decorations to take home and use in their own house. Even empty jar lids can be filled with plaster of Paris and once it hardens can be painted and used as colorful homemade Christmas decorations, an activity in which even the youngest members of the family can participate. The choice of materials from which homemade Christmas decorations can be made is virtually endless. And while many stick to traditional colors such as red and green, blues and plaids are quickly becoming popular colors for decorative purposes.
So as the holidays approach this year, think about setting aside some time for making homemade customized decorations as a family project. For many people Christmas and Family just go together, and nothing does that better than homemade Christmas decorations. After all, spending time together is what the holidays are all about.
