Although it seems to start earlier every year, when the end of November rolls around, the Christmas season really gets underway. Towns break out the decorations, stores give specials on just about everything they’re selling, and many people go shopping for ornaments. Besides the standard Christmas tree, there are a wide variety of decorations that you can use to get into the spirit of Christmas. Every single year, people design new, more creative, more fantastic (and more expensive) Christmas decorations. Many of these are suitable for a variety of locations around the house, wherever you have room, but some are designed specifically for a Christmas tree or to be hung from doorways or to spruce up the outside of your home. In fact, you can probably find ornaments — from vintage Christmas decorations up to the lastest sports-team branded fare — for just about any spot in your home if you want to.
Save Some Money
Not all of them have to be bought –- if money is tight, you can create a lot of them yourself to economize. If you’re an arts and crafts kind of person, then you can save lots of money if you design your own Christmas decorations. Making them can be a lot of fun too, and you’ll feel as if they’re more of an accomplishment if you make them yourself as opposed to buying them, giving them more nostalgic value over the years — the best ones might become family hierlooms, your own vintage Christmas decorations. Some easy suggestions for make-your-own Christmas decorations include creating your own reeves and using modeling clay to make figurines. The cost of the materials to make these decorations will be much less than if you buy them in stores already made, so you’ll be having a thrifty Christmas season as well as having more fun.
Splurge and Let There Be Light
You know that house in your neighborhood with its entire yard filled up with Christmas lights and lit figures? Seems there’s always someone determined to outdo everybody else. But even if your goals are more modest, for a small investment, you can purchase many lighted lawn decorations for a few dollars at a wide variety of stores during the holiday season (discount stores like Target or Wal-Mart are a good place start — but get there early for best selection). Most of this type of decorations tend to be newer and store-bought — making this type of thing is just beyond practical for most of us, and any vintage Christmas decorations of this type that exist tend to be museum pieces! But with just a little planning and effort, your outdoor Christmas decorations will make your mark on the festive feel of your neighborhood.
Go All the Way
If you really want to feel the spirit of Christmas, then you’ll want to fill up your house with Christmas decorations, too. They aren’t very expensive, and you can find them in just about anywhere in the weeks leading up to Christmas. If you’re the type to plan ahead, you can also get some great deals on all kinds of decorating paraphernalia right after the Holidays. Or talk with older family or friends — they might have some lovely vintage Christmas decorations that they would be willing to pass on to you, which gets you some fantastic decorations at zero cost to you!
So get your shopping done early, and hope for snow. But remember, Christmas decorations — old, new, indoor, outdoor, homemade or store-bought — ensure that every year, you’ll be surrounded with plenty of Christmas cheer.
