With the Christmas season coming up fast, as always, there are tons of things to get done - presents, parties, and of course, decorating. First, there is the Christmas tree to think about, then table centerpieces, wall decorations, window dressings, the mantel and more. And don’t forget the outdoor Christmas décor! Maybe you have a tried and true collection of decorations you want to update or add to, or maybe you’ve never gotten around to dressing up your yard before. Whatever your personal situation, you definitely do not want to leave your yard bare this Christmas, so here are a few outdoor Christmas decorating ideas.
Outdoor Christmas Décor Comes in Many Forms
If you are interested in just basic outdoor Christmas ornaments, then lights are the way to go.
Regardless of where you live, you’ll want to go with the weather-proof lights that are available for outdoor home use. While most lights sold nowadays can tolerate one or more burned-out bulbs, if any bulb is broken, the string probably will not light, so it’s a good idea to test each string before you start putting them up. You might also want to consider the new LED lights. They have a cool modern look, and use a fraction of the energy of traditional lights. The downside is they’re still substantially more expensive than the older type.
The trees and bushes in your yard can make beautiful lighted natural sculptures. If you gave up on this type of lighting because you remember the days when you had to untangle strings of lights and then try to put them on the bushes, well, those days are gone. Now there is an easier way to light up your bushes as part of your outdoor Christmas decoration.
Yes, now it can be as simple as throwing the lights over the bushes, and plugging in the power cord. How is that possible? Well, the lights come in a net instead of one long string. Thus, they do not tangle!
Of course outdoor Christmas decorating ideas are not limited to adding lights to existing structures and vegetation. It is also about the overall theme that you are going for. For example, if you are interested in placing lots of candy canes in your front yard, there are a variety of ways to do this.
First of all, a must-have as part of your outdoor Christmas décor is those giant plastic candy canes. You can get those in a three-dimensional design, or a two-dimensional design. If you want a mostly three-dimensional outdoor Christmas décor, then you should place the plastic candy canes on either side of your walkway leading up to your front door.
You can also take some more plastic candy canes and place them around any trees that you might have. Some people even like to use these plastic candy canes to frame their driveway. Indeed, there is no limit to where they can be placed in your yard. However, something that you might have to keep in mind is there is such a thing as too much, and you want the decorations to all be visible without them also being overwhelming.
When it comes to two-dimensional candy canes, those are better suited to decorate the front door. For example, they can serve as a hanging door decoration, or as removable plastic decorations on window glass. However, it is important to note that although they are meant to be visible from the outside, they must be applied from the inside.
